Street Style Look of the Week: Mom’s Jacket for a Night on the Town

“I hated that my mom dressed me as a child,” Ella Campbell, 23, recounted of her earliest memories of clothes. “She would send me to school in a skirt with leggings and a top on, and I’d, like, shimmy the skirt up and put it on top of my top.” Those early acts of styling, she said, were “my creative outlet.”

Campbell and a friend were waiting in line outside the Corner Store, a restaurant on Houston Street in Manhattan, one Friday afternoon in April. She said that her shaggy, faux-fleece jacket had belonged to her mother (“my fashion icon,” she said). “I try to steer away from darker clothes,” she added. For that, she let her accessories do the work, including her Staud shoes and her “90’s” bag from the Row.

As a native of New Brunswick, Canada, Campbell also has a love for creatures of the sea. “Where I’m from — this is super random — but we have a lot of fresh shellfish and things like that,” she said. “So I’m totally drawn to jewelry with fish on it or a sweater with a lobster on it. Just something about it makes me feel like I’m close to home.”

As for dinner? “We’re really drawn to the caviar and lobster rolls,” she said. “But yeah, we’re really hoping to get in.”
