Rising Monsoon Skin Infections: Essential Tips for Keeping Your Skin Healthy, ETHealthworld

New Delhi: Every season brings its own set of challenges for the skin. Summers can lead to tanning, sunburn, and heat-related skin issues, while winters often cause dryness. The monsoon season, however, creates damp and humid conditions that increase the risk of various skin infections.
During the monsoon, mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya are more prevalent. Skin rashes can be a common symptom of these diseases.
However, there is a significant rise in skin-related problems during this period. Increased humidity, damp clothing, and prolonged exposure to moisture create an ideal environment for fungal and bacterial infections to thrive.
Cases of ringworm, fungal infections, intertrigo, and some bacterial infections tend to increase significantly during the rainy season. If not treated properly, these infections can spread rapidly due to their contagious nature and may affect multiple members of a household. The problem is often aggravated by self-medication and the use of steroid-containing over-the-counter creams without medical supervision. While such creams may temporarily reduce itching and redness, they can worsen the infection, making it more difficult to treat and leading to prolonged suffering as well as lengthy and costly treatment.Lifestyle habits can also contribute to skin problems during the monsoon. Tight-fitting clothes, such as jeans, synthetic garments, and dry-fit clothing worn during workouts, trap sweat and moisture instead of absorbing them, creating conditions that favour fungal growth. Areas such as the groin, underarms, and skin folds are particularly vulnerable. Similarly, wearing closed shoes for long hours can lead to excessive moisture between the toes, increasing the risk of fungal and secondary bacterial infections. Damp socks further add to the problem.
Apart from fungal infections, insect bite-related allergic rashes also become more common during the rainy season. Bites from mosquitoes and other insects can cause itching, allergic reactions, and skin rashes. In addition, certain viral illnesses that are more prevalent during the monsoon may also present with skin eruptions and rashes.
Precautions to Protect Your Skin
Maintaining good hygiene and keeping the skin dry are the most effective ways to prevent infections during the monsoon. Some simple precautions include:
- Change clothes immediately after getting wet in the rain.
- Dry the body thoroughly after bathing, paying special attention to skin folds.
- Wear loose-fitting cotton clothing that allows the skin to breathe.
- Avoid tight and restrictive clothing.
- Do not reuse clothes without washing them.
- Wash infected clothing separately, preferably in hot water.
- Keep feet dry and change socks regularly.
- Dry shoes properly before wearing them again.
- Use a raincoat or umbrella when outdoors to minimise prolonged exposure to rain.
- Be cautious of insect bites and take measures to prevent them.
- Consult a qualified healthcare professional if you notice persistent itching, rashes or skin lesions.
A key message for skin care during the monsoon is to avoid self-medication. Steroid-containing creams, when used without proper medical advice, may provide temporary relief from itching and redness but can allow fungal infections to spread and become more severe. Seeking timely medical consultation ensures an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, helping prevent complications and reducing the risk of the infection spreading to others. With a few simple precautions and timely medical attention, it is possible to keep your skin healthy, comfortable and infection-free throughout the monsoon season
